HWK4.5

INCREASED GOVERNMENT DEFECIT DID NOT FIT REAGAN’S “BRAND”, BUT THE BLOCK GRANT POLICY DID.

Reagan promised to lower government spending and lower taxes, but he increased military spending by 85%. With lowered taxes and increased military spending, the US’s income is too meager for its spending. This is why national debt tripled from $75 billion to $221 billion.

The Block Grant Policy fitted Reagan’s conservative “brand”. In his inaugural speech, Reagan said he will “curb the size and the influence of the Federal establishment and demand recognition… to the state.” The Block Grant Policy cut the power of the federal government and gave the states more power to control their own precinct. The state is able to do things without worrying whether or not the federal government will take part in it.

"Who is to blame for America's trend toward high divorce rates, starting in the 1970s?"

FEMALE FEMINISTS ARE TO BE BLAMED FOR THE HIGH DIVORCE RATES IN THE 1970s.

Female feminists' actions resulted in an increase of supporters for no fualt divorce policy. People like Betty Friedan influenced the female population and got them to want reform. Her problem that had no name was the thing that every wife have in common.

Female feminists, with their ferocious battle, pushed no fault divorce to be enact. No fault divorce allowed men to divorce their spouses without the fear for any consequences. From 1975 to 1983, divorced female increased to 28%.

As female feminists seek for equality for women, they did not want to be dependent on men anymore. Women became seeking for freedom and independence. With this in mind, husbands and wifes got divorced and women got jobs and made money on their own.

In the TV series,  All in the Family, it is evident newer generation women are getting education and having a new mind towards becoming independent. The daughter getting a job shows that women are progressing towards becoming independent and not relying on their husbands.

"Who is to blame for America's trend toward high divorce rates, starting in the 1970s?"

Feminism is what caused the the high divorce rates in the US in the 1970s
Due to proactive feminist civil right movement groups, people who supported no fault divorce policy increased in numbers. People like Betty Friedan influenced the female population and got them to want reform. Her problem that had no name was the thing that every wife have in common.

Woman seeking independence is to be blamed

The wife's inability to please the husband is another factor. While wives are pursuing their "dream", the husbands are all looking at younger fresh meat. The wives don't even pay attention to what their husbands are doing and as things progress on, a divorce becomes inevitable.

Question: How important was airpower in US fight v. Japanese, '41-42 (Battle of Midway)

Torpedo planes may not have enough fuel to safely fly back to the carrier. Hornet fighters would have to ditch their planes in mid air. Admiral Fletcher was then forced to launch his planes much later than the designated time.
(William L. O'Neill. Midway, Battle of. n.p., Oxford University Press, 1999. eLibrary. Web. 07 Mar. 2010.)

When the last bombers took off, others have already finished with their primary targets and were working on their secondary targets. In an interview with Navy Commander M.A. Merril, he recalls the primary target including a ship called Soryu was already on fire by the time he got in formation.

“Non-violent resistance to injustice was a good strategy for southern civil rights leaders.”

agree
in the 1960s, there was a  non-violent sit-in in Nashville. The minority race would sit-in an all white restaurant and demand to be served. Tens of thousands of students did these sit-ins. The owners wouldn't serve them food. Owners had no choice but to change the rules and serve them.

disagree
Freedom Summer was an organization that failed because it was non-violent. Their non-violent nature allowed them to be vulnerable to attack. They tried to help African Americans participate in the government, but in return, lots were killed.

What arguments could be made FOR and AGAINST this statment: "America's poor, in the mid 20th century, were mostly responsible for their own problems."

FOR:
The government as America
The Housing Act in 1949 made the US a poor nation. In order to provide better housing, the government issued an order to tear down the slums, and renew them with high rises. The already poor people living in the slums became homeless, losing their only possession, their crummy house.

The people as America
Agribusiness in the 1950s was the new way to process food. Farmers were put out of business because they can't keep up with the demand and the cheap prices of the foods from agribusiness. Farmers became a part of the poor America.

AGAINST

700'000 Puerto Ricans migrated into the US in 1955. They all moved there to find jobs in factories. These factories relocated to the suburbs, and the jobs disappeared. This is because poor imigrants can't afford to live in the suburbs, so they are forced to life in the urban.

Between 1945 and 1960, about 5 million African Americans migrated into the US in search for a job. Most of them settled in the urban, but the factories relocated in to the suburbs. Just like the situation above, African Americans can't afford to life in the suburbs.

"How real was the threat of Communist spies within the USA?"

Alger Hiss was an American official who was accused of spying for the Soviet Union. In 1950, Hiss was convicted of perjury, but he continued to enforce his innocence. But in 1995, secret documents were made public and these documents indicated that Hiss probably had spied for the Soviet Union.

German-born British physicist, Klaus Fuchs, spied for the Soviet Union. He was a physicist working on the Manhattan Project. The Rosenberg Trials was the result of Fuchs. Ethel and Julius Rosenberg passed the project details on to the Soviets. These two were the only two American civilians to be killed.

"Is it fair to say that the anxiety caused in the US due to Nuclear threat, was useful and 'healthy?'

Anxiety was useful because of FDCA. Citizens of the US were extremely cooperative when there may be a nuclear threat. the FDCA used Bert the Turtle to encourage people to go to fallout shelters. People looked for ways to protect themselves, rendering it healthy.

How does the CIA's activities in Iran show that the US behaves undemocratically in its foreign policy?

The CIA trained the SAVAK, which was the shah's personal secret police. This was undemocratic because supporting shah will sort of creating a dictatorship. Shah can dictate SAVAK to do things without the people's knowledge. And one can never know if the shah will use the secret police to take over the country.

The CIA used propaganda to ruin Mossadeq, the democratically elected leader. The CIA used $150'000 to create crap about Mossadeq. Politically speaking, saying bad things about the other parties is considered bad thing and extremely undemocratic if this was done in a cheap way like propaganda.

1) "How convincing was America's attempts to influence other parts of the world to side with them in the Cold War?"

The US was not convincing when it attempted to get Nicaragua and Haiti to side with the US. The US tried to get their support by providing funds to Nicaragua and Haiti. Instead of supporting the US, these two nations used the money to tighten their grip on power.

The US wasn't convincing when it changed Guatemala's government to a militaristic one. The US was afraid the Guatemalan government might change to a communist one. The new government went through reforms and jailed critics. This made the Guatemalans view the US as an enemy of social reform.

"How wise were America's decisions to produce advanced weapons during the Cold War's first 20 years?"

It wasn't wise when the US developed weapons during the Cold War. The production of these weapons intimidated the Soviets and added fuel to the fire. The Soviets began building their own versions of WOMD. Weapons like nuclear submarines and H-bombs.

(WOMD: weapon of mass destruction)

The US entered the Vietnam War (1950-1975) to try to stop comunism from seeping in. The US was afraid that communism might spread even more if Vietnam was to be taken over by communist. This was not justifiable because the US ended in a great retreat.

The Korean War (1950-1953) was a successful attempt to stop the communist from running the border into South Korea. The US allied up with South Korea to fight against North Korea and the supporting Communist China.

1)The cold war could have been avoided if Stalin hadn't made the speech that attacked the US. He gave a speech in 1946 about how there will be no peace as long as there are Capitalists in the world. (HA! textbook)

2) The cold war could have been avoided if Kennan didn't say the Soviets are an immediate threat. In the Long telegram, Kennan even said that the Soviets will extend their power when the opportunity arrives. (http://www.johndclare.net/cold_war7_Kennan.htm)

3) The Truman Doctrine angered the Soviets because the doctrine allowed the US to aid countries like Greek and Turkey to resist communism. The Soviets viewed this as the US destroying communism and bringing a security threat to Russia. (HA! textbook)

4) The cold war could have been prevented if the Soviets hadn't taken over other countries. The US wasn't happy with the fact that the Soviets took over, for example, Romania and forced the king to bow to a pro-communist government. (HA! textbook)
